Portrait of Eyre de Lanux by Man Ray, 1925

EYRE DE LANUX (1894-1996)

Elizabeth Eyre de Lanux was an American multifaceted artist and a prominent figure in the Parisian and New York circles of the interwar period, counting among her friends Picasso, Duchamp, Picabia, and Neruda. She was dubbed the « Amazon of Art Deco » for her radical vision of design and furniture in a male-dominated milieu.

Eyre de Lanux’s work remains somewhat confidential and rare, yet she was one of the emblematic creators of the Art Deco period, bridging through her pieces the early modernism of Eileen Gray and the rationalism of Charlotte Perriand.

Her designs, reminiscent of Jean-Michel Frank’s ‘luxe pauvre’ aesthetic, reflect a ‘less is more’ approach. Yet, with innovative materials such as marbled paper, glass, and linoleum, she pushed the boundaries of design towards what would become known as international Modernism. Most notably, her objects combine unusual pairings of materials, transforming the ordinary into the sublime.
