Furnishing by Unfurnishing

In homage to the timeless legacy of Jean-Michel Frank, the booth of Galerie Maxime Flatry at Design Miami Basel 2024 is a celebration of the designer, primarily focusing on his quest for simplicity that involves essentializing forms and spaces in the most profound manner.

Jean-Michel Frank, the most significant Art Deco designer, left an indelible mark on the decorative arts, and his work still stands as the epitome of timeless design in the 20th century.

This exhibit acts indeed as a tribute to the creator who had the art of «furnishing by unfurnishing,» explo- ring absolute and radical simplicity that the gallery aims to express through this booth.

Highlighted pieces include a significant pair of armchairs with their original leather and sycamore feet, featuring truncated inverted pyramid front legs, a characteristic Frank touch. These armchairs are a variant of the ‘Confortable’ model, exclusively created for the couturier and perfumer Marcel Rochas’ salon around 1930.

Alongside the latter, other important pieces were seen, certified, and acclaimed for their rarity by the Jean-Michel Frank committee. Together, this ensemble evokes the essence of drastic minimalism and timeless lines of the designer.
